Voice Therapy
How does a speech therapist help someone with their voice? Combine two parts education, specific experience, demanding certifications, supportive mentors, and the right specialized equipment, and you have a speech speech therapist, or speech-language pathologists in the United States, that can effectively help improve your voice.
At My Voice Speech Therapy, in order to confidently and successfully help those with their voice concerns, we bring the following to the table:
Speech-Language Pathology education spanning typical voice and disordered voice understanding
Experience in voice, voice disorders, and neurologic disease
“Bedside” manner while empathizing with the changes they are experiencing
Mentorship
Voice Equipment
In addition to using both the clinical and the client’s ear, we also use objective measurements to guide the progress towards a strong voice. We explain to the client that the Sound Pressure Level Meter doesn’t record their voice, it simply shows how loud they are during different speaking tasks. Although recording the client’s voice for use as an audio playback can be helpful, the Sound Pressure Level Meter does an excellent job at measuring real-time sound loudness in decibels. We obtain an average of loudness in certain speech tasks and with varying levels of support from the Speech-Language Pathologist. This data can demonstrate session-to-session progress, carry-over of voice techniques by the client, and to guide the treatment. It also provides us with immediate feedback to the client as needed to aide in insight, since:
Even with this tool, the ultimate goal is to help the voice client reach their best possible voice using their own muscles.

Review
Overall, the REED Instrument Sound Pressure Level Meter has been perfect for live, real-time values to help support our clients during speech therapy. It is easy to clean, robust enough for the commute while traveling to see clients in their home (it comes with a carrying box!), and it is non-intrusive when placing it on a barrier cloth in our client’s homes. A small, manipulatable screw-on tripod is essential to keep the Sound Pressure Level Meter off the table and to angle it correctly for us to see the numbers on the screen while providing speech therapy to the client.

Calibration
Of note, even though REED Instrument’s Sound Pressure Level Meter seems to be calibrated right out of the box, it is recommended to use their other product for periodic calibration. See below for our affiliate link:
Mini Tripod
This flexible small tripod stand is perfect for screwing onto the back of the REED Instruments Sound Pressure Level Meter to keep the foam piece away from any other objects and to capture the sound from the voice client effectively. Power Supplies
To keep our REED Instruments and Speech Therapy visits running smoothly, we carry a small screwdriver (pictured right, affiliate link) and battery replacement in our mobile bag. Even though the device turns off automatically and it comes with a battery, the combination of a screw driver + battery has saved us a few times heading into client’s homes!
